Why environmental implications of AI cannot be an afterthought.

By Digital Jewels  Published On April 21, 2026

The rapid expansion of AI carries significant environmental implications, largely driven by the massive volumes of data required to train and operate the AI models. With all the data being generated, the demand for large-scale data centres grows, bringing with it substantial energy consumption, water usage, and associated carbon emissions.

Without intervention, the global AI ecosystem risks amplifying existing environmental pressures, hence the environmental implications cannot be an afterthought. Measures must be put in place now, as the technology evolves.

ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems can play a powerful role in managing and reducing the environmental impacts associated with AI as it provides a structured environmental management framework.

The PECB ISO 14001 Brochure can be found at https://pecb.com/pdf/brochures/4/iso-14001-lead-implementer_4p.pdf
